Old Fourth Ward's New Openings Keep Different Hours Than the Bars That Left

Since fall 2025, Old Fourth Ward has lost three bars that were built for peak hours, and gained four places that change what they are as the day goes on. On Edgewood Avenue, Joystick Gamebar, Georgia Beer Garden and Mambo Zombi are gone. Near the Eastside Trail and on Edgewood itself, the 2026 arrivals include a brasserie with a bookshop that opens for lunch, a record shop that serves coffee in the afternoon and cocktails until 2:30 a.m., a New Orleans seafood room with weekend brunch and jazz four nights a week, and a burger pop-up that runs until 3 a.m. on two nights. The neighborhood now has a lot more open hours, spread across far more of the week than before.

Here's the new week at a glance, using each spot's current posted hours.

Spot Address Open Closed
Sargent 405 N Angier Ave NE, Suite 220 Tue–Thu 11:30 a.m.–9 p.m., Fri–Sat 11:30 a.m.–10 p.m., Sun 11:30 a.m.–5 p.m. Monday
Read The Room 691 John Wesley Dobbs Ave NE, Unit P Wed and Sun noon–10 p.m., Thu noon–2 a.m., Fri–Sat noon–2:30 a.m. Monday, Tuesday
The Roux Kitchen & Cocktails 537 Edgewood Ave SE Tue–Wed 5–10 p.m., Thu–Sun 5–11 p.m., Sat–Sun brunch 11 a.m.–3 p.m. Monday
Thicc Burger at Pisces Upstairs at Pisces, Edgewood Ave Fri–Sat 8 p.m.–3 a.m. Sunday–Thursday

All four are dark on Monday. From Tuesday through Sunday, at least one of them is open from 11:30 a.m. until 10 p.m. or later, and from Thursday through Saturday something stays open until 2 a.m. or later.

The ceiling Edgewood's old bars kept hitting

In July, Joystick co-owner Johnny Martinez explained to Rough Draft Atlanta why the gaming bar was leaving Edgewood after 14 years. The problem he described was arithmetic. Sales never got back above 85% of pre-pandemic levels, the power bill doubled, security became a new cost, and the bar was capped at 98 people. "No matter how busy we are, there's a ceiling on what we can earn," he told the outlet. "But there hasn't been the same ceiling on our expenses." The lease ran out in February, and Joystick announced a move to 485 Flat Shoals Ave. in East Atlanta Village, the former East Side Lounge space across from The Earl.

The same story noted that Georgia Beer Garden and the cocktail bar upstairs, Mambo Zombi, had closed. That Joystick ownership group was behind both. According to What Now Atlanta, Mambo Zombi left because the building at 420 Edgewood Ave. had sold, and it served its last night on Sept. 28, 2025.

Martinez also wanted people to know how many neighbors were still working to keep the street going. He named Our Bar, Church, Lore, Pisces and Edgewood Pizza, all still on Edgewood. Edgewood's bar core is still there. What changed is the kind of business that has opened around it since.

Edgewood added dinner, brunch and a burger window

The Roux Kitchen & Cocktails, at 537 Edgewood Ave SE, bills itself as a New Orleans-inspired seafood lounge with cocktails and live music. The Infatuation called it a much-needed boost for Edgewood after losing Joystick and Georgia Beer Garden. Its menu runs from po'boys, gumbo and beignets to oysters, branzino and a Cajun fried lobster. Rough Draft included it in its September 2026 openings roundup.

The hours set The Roux apart from the bars that left. Dinner runs Tuesday through Sunday, and on Saturday and Sunday the doors also open for brunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Edgewood now has a weekend daytime table that wasn't there before. The events page lists live jazz Thursday through Sunday at 7:30 p.m.

Rough Draft's Oct. 8 Quick Bites reported that Thicc Burger is serving smash burgers and patty melts upstairs at Pisces, the Edgewood dance club, on Friday and Saturday nights from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m. The same upstairs room runs beer and shot specials from 8 to 10 p.m. on those nights. That residency is Edgewood's 3 a.m. food option for now. It runs on weekends only, and no end date has been posted.

The trail side now covers lunch, and stays up later than Edgewood

Walk north toward the Eastside Trail and the format logic gets stronger.

Sargent opened Aug. 18 near 3 Parks Wine Shop and the Forth hotel. It comes from the team behind Lucian Books & Wine in Buckhead, and Atlanta Magazine describes it as "less hushed destination, more everyday neighborhood brasserie." Executive chef Jason Paolini's menu is about twice the size of Lucian's, with more seafood and steadier staples. Lunch brings a burger, chicken paillard, duck confit and a club sandwich Paolini wants to make iconic. Dinner adds carbonara, roasted halibut and prime rib. Co-owner Katie Barringer curates the retail side, art-focused books and specialty magazines such as Noble Rot and Neptune Papers, all of which you can take home, according to The Local Palate. Its posted hours start at 11:30 a.m. six days a week, and Sunday is a long lunch that ends at 5. That's a daytime anchor for the Angier end of the trail, where it's easy to stop between errands.

Read The Room, at 691 John Wesley Dobbs Ave NE, opened in July and made the AJC's July openings roundup. Before it opened, owner Michael Copenhaver described a vinyl shop, restaurant and bar with a downstairs, record-focused "Assembly Area" and record consignments. Its own site lists daytime coffee, cocktails, bites and hi-fi vinyl listening. The doors open at noon Wednesday through Sunday and stay open until 2 a.m. Thursday and 2:30 a.m. Friday and Saturday.

So the latest-closing permanent opening on this list isn't on Edgewood. It's a record shop off the trail that also handles the afternoon coffee crowd. And like Sargent and The Roux, it sells to different customers at different hours from the same room. That spreads earning time across far more of the day than a 98-person bar that only fills up after dark.

The trail end of the neighborhood also picked up two counters at Ponce City Market, which the Atlanta Beltline's September roundup lists among recent Eastside Trail openings. Okiboru, recognized with a Michelin Bib Gourmand, serves house-made ramen and tsukemen. Norifish Roll Bar makes rolls with fish from Japan's Toyosu Market.

Putting the new hours to work

  1. A weekday lunch meeting. Sargent opens at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and the bookshop shelves give you something to do if the other person is running late.
  2. A Wednesday or Sunday afternoon with a laptop or a stack of records. Read The Room opens at noon those days and closes at 10 p.m., so it's a quieter, earlier night than its weekend hours.
  3. Weekend brunch on Edgewood. The Roux serves Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., then reopens for dinner at 5.
  4. Dinner with live music. The Roux's jazz starts at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Sunday.
  5. The 2 a.m. question. On Friday and Saturday, Thicc Burger runs upstairs at Pisces until 3 a.m., and Read The Room pours until 2:30 a.m.
  6. Monday. None of the four is open, so plan on cooking at home.

Dates on the near calendar

The new places fill the regular week. These dates give you a reason to head toward the trail end of the neighborhood between now and early December:

  • Saturday, Oct. 31: Trick-or-Treat on The Roof at Ponce City Market runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with costume parades at 1 and 4 p.m. The market's calendar also lists the Roof's Haunted Casino Halloween event the same day.
  • Wednesday, Nov. 4, and Wednesday, Dec. 2: Live jazz at Ponce City Market from 7 to 10 p.m.
  • Thursday, Nov. 5, and Thursday, Dec. 3: Live music in the market's 2nd Floor Alcove.
  • Friday, Nov. 6, through Sunday, Nov. 8: The free ATL StyleWriters Jam returns to the Beltline with live painting sessions from noon to 8 p.m. each day, featuring founders of Atlanta's style-writing scene such as Doctor Dax and Sparky Z. The Eastside Trail is among the planned locations. The Beltline says final sites are still being set, and a full map is coming.

The StyleWriters weekend lands well with the new hours. Watch a piece go up on the trail in the afternoon, eat at Sargent before it closes at 10 on Friday or Saturday, and finish at Read The Room after that.

When a block's businesses start keeping different hours, the change shows up in what buyers ask about and what a listing can honestly promise about the walk out the front door.
